Sitting at the edge of the Tons Nadi River, the Tapkeshwar Temple is one of Dehradun’s most ancient places of worship. Located at a distance of 5.5 kilometers from the city centre, Tapkeshwar is a temple inside a damp cave and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is also the site of the annual Maha Shivratri Fair. One of Dehradun’s most popular tourist destinations, the Tapkeshwar Temple is flocked by devotees who come to pay their respects to Lord Shiva. The water from the river it sits beside enters the cave, which eventually drips off on the Shiv Ling. The temple derives its name from the dripping of the water from the roof of the cave. This water eventually disappears underground, only to reappear as a stream a few yards away from the temple. The Tapkeshwar Temple also has cool sulphur springs around its complex where pilgrims come to bathe.
